ABSTRACT

A rhegmatogenous RD occurs as a result of a break in the neurosensory retina. It occurs at a rate of 1:10 000 per annum in the general population. Once a retinal break forms, fluid can pass into the subretinal space, separating the retina from the retinal pigment epithelium. At presentation, 10% of patients with a rhegmatogenous RD will also have an asymptomatic RD in the contralateral eye.
