ABSTRACT

The shaken baby syndrome (SBS) is a form of child abuse in which the perpetrator violently shakes an infant such that the child suffers all or some combination of eye, brain and skeletal injury. Victims are usually less than 2 years old but occasionally may be as old as 4 years. It is the unique anatomy of these young children that makes them particularly vulnerable to this type of injury. Retinal hemorrhages are the most common ocular manifestation.
