ABSTRACT

Congenital cataract is a major cause of blind and partially sighted children, with an incidence of 1 per 4000-10000 live births. In particular, neonates with bilateral dense lens opacities are particularly at risk of long-term visual deprivation and warrant urgent surgical intervention, within the first 6 weeks of life whenever possible. Amblyopia is the main limiting factor of the final visual outcome and its management important. To this end parental education about visual prognosis and surgery, and their key role in post-operative refractive correction and occlusion therapy, is crucial.
