ABSTRACT
The optical function of the cornea is to refract and transmit light. The maintenance of corneal transparency is therefore of paramount importance.
Problem
It can be difficult to determine the cause of a corneal opacity from its appearance, especially in view of the vast number of potential aetiologies. In the acute phase of corneal disease other signs may be present that have diagnostic significance. In chronic opacification the diagnostic clues may be limited.
