ABSTRACT

The terminology is confusing. Some authors classify LN as a congenital nystagmus. It can have a profound effect on visual acuity.

Background

Latent nystagmus is defined as a nystagmus present when one eye is occluded. Manifest-latent nystagmus has a similar waveform and exists when both eyes are open. In some patients, both eyes are open but the individual is suppressing one eye. When this is present, the amplitude may increase further with occlusion of the suppressed eye. With sensitive recording, nearly all latent nystagmus has a manifest component.
