ABSTRACT

Non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION) is a common cause of visual loss in the elderly.

Problem

Between 6 and 14% of patients with AION will have giant cell arteritis (arteritic AION), the remainder are termed non-arteritic (NAION). The first challenge is to recognize those patients with giant cell arteritis so that immediate steps can be taken to reduce the risk of further loss of vision. Having excluded GCA, patients should be screened for treatable risk factors for NAION.
