ABSTRACT

Because there is no set-up, walkabout theatre can occur in places where theatre is not normally encouraged, such as shops and other places of work. The disruptive effect produced is very attractive to those with provocateur tendencies. The interaction with the spectators will be quite different from a static show. It will be a much briefer exchange and more on a one-to-one basis. There can be more room for play than in a stationary show in which the boundary between performer and audience is clearly delineated. The required mobility means it is necessary to operate without encumbering props and equipment so there will be more of an emphasis on character, costume and improvisation since these are the only available tools.
