ABSTRACT

This chapter is written in the spirit of sharing with teachers and parents our practice and our thinking about early childhood environments, young children and the arts. The thoughts of Comenius, Pestalozzi, Froebel, Dewey, Greenman, Malaguzzi and Gandini have all contributed to our understanding of learning environments and their role in early childhood education. Feeney and Moravcik, Kolbe, Gardner and Forman have contributed to our understanding of the ways in which children express themselves (through the arts and arts media) and the value of these experiences for their development in all of the domains.
