ABSTRACT

The turn of the century is a crucial time in the history of Australia and other countries facing the enormous challenge of improving the relations between indigenous peoples and their wider communities. In 1994, Pat Dodson, former Chair of the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation, remarked:

We need to show that we are capable of resolving the causes of disharmony and injustice that have so often marked this relationship. …It is imperative that we all look for innovative ways of…working together (Aboriginal Australians, Minority Rights Group International Report, 1994:10).
