ABSTRACT

This piece of research aimed to improve narrative writing in Year 6 and to help boost National Test scores from a rather low 42 per cent at Level 4 and above (against a national target of 80 per cent). The school had identified narrative writing as a particular focus for improvement. It is hoped that this account, jointly produced by the teacher and the researcher, will make the findings accessible to other teachers and researchers, exemplifying both the innovation and the research, and helping to inform other teachers’ judgements. It is, of course, a small-scale study. Its ambition is to provoke discussion about good teaching, and not to offer prescriptions for practice. Equally, it is only one kind of teacher research, involving the teacher in systematically engaging with rather than in research.
