ABSTRACT

The last chapter outlined in detail the parallel processes that surround the unbundling of infrastructure networks and the sociospatial fragmentation of cities that, we argue, are so comprehensively undermining the legacies of the modern infrastructural ideal in many cities around the world. In this chapter we turn from the description of these trends to their explanation. Our task now is to engage with contemporary social, technological and urban theories that help us to understand further why parallel processes of infrastructural unbundling and urban splintering are under way.
