ABSTRACT

Perhaps the most striking feature of the primary school as a context for children’s daily life is the huge range in the character and quality of the buildings and playspace.

Age and Type of School Building

We were interested in how staff assessed the school building as a health-related environment for the children and we tried to identify the character of the building by asking about its age and type. The answers probably give a broad picture of character, although, as respondents noted, many schools had grown ‘organically’ and comprised a range of buildings dating from different periods. As one small town school in the south-west writes:

The school buildings have been ‘knocked through’ over the last 50 years to provide access and accommodation as the school has expanded. The internal layout has to be seen to be believed.
