ABSTRACT

Church council held in 403 near Chalcedon. Theophilus, bishop of Alexandria, had accused John Chrysostom, bishop of Constantinople, of misconduct regarding the Tall Brothers. The synod, composed of thirty-six to forty-five bishops mostly from Egypt, deposed Chrysostom on false charges. The emperor, Arcadius, sent him into exile in Bithynia, but popular outcry and an earthquake led to his reinstatement in a matter of days.
