ABSTRACT

Catholicos of the Persian church at Seleucia-Ctesiphon (420/1-456). During the persecution of Persian Christians by king Bahram V, the Persian government made efforts to appoint, or otherwise determine, the catholicos. When finally it was permitted, the Persian church elected Dadišo' as catholicos in 420/1. The election and the preeminence of the see of Seleucia-Ctesiphon were disputed by a group of dissidents led by Batai of Hormizdardašir. These worked among the churches to slander and discredit Dadišo' and with the Persians to imprison him. After his release, realizing their own precarious authority, most of the Persian bishops attended what became known as the Synod of Dadišo'.
