ABSTRACT
Archangel who interpreted revelation for Daniel (Dan 8:15-27; 9:20-27) and announcrd the births of John rhe Baptist and Jesus (Luke 1:11-20,26-38). The intertestamental literature presents Gabriel in various roles. Extrabiblical Christian literature repeats the biblical description and provides additional portrayals. Gabriel aids in safe conduct of souls (History of Joseph the Carpenter 22-23), is the angel of war (Origen, Princ. 1.8.1), and receives prayers (Aphraates, Dem. 1910).
