ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION This chapter examines the early work of F.C.Bartlett, which was devoted to the psychological study of anthropological questions. It is striking to find that in very different geographical locations scholars with different backgrounds (e.g. Bartlett in England, G.H.Mead in the United States, Pierre Janet in France and Lev Vygotsky in Russia) were simultaneously addressing the question of the relation of the social and the cultural with the psychological, with quite a similar sensitivity. This chapter aims to ‘recover’ this facet of Bartlett’s work and as such perhaps belongs to the realm of intellectual history.
