ABSTRACT

The views presented here have been developed in greater detail in my Beyond the Big Bang: Quantum Cosmologies and God (La Salle, IL: Open Court, 1990) and in my Religion, Science and Naturalism (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1996), as well as in contributions to various books and journals, e.g. in Niels Henrik Gregersen and Wentzel J. van Huyssteen (eds) Rethinking Theology and Science: Six Models for the Current Dialogue (Grand Rapids, MI: Eerdmans, 1998), in R. J. Russell et al. (eds) Evolutionary and Molecular Biology: Scientific Perspectives on Divine Action (Vatican City: Vatican Observatory and Berkeley: Center for Theology and the Natural Sciences, 1998), and in articles on ‘naturalism’ in Zygon: Journal of Religion and Science in December 1997, 1998 and 2000. An earlier version of this book appeared in Dutch as Van Niets tot Nu: Een wetenschappelijke scheppingsvertelling (Kampen: Kok, 1996). Klaus Blömer translated the book into German, where it appeared in an expanded form as Vom Nichts zum Jetzt: Eine etwas andere Schöpfungsgeschichte (Hannover: Lutherisches Verlagshaus, 1998). An earlier and briefer version of the creation narrative and its explication appeared as the first of two Andreas Idreos lectures, held in May 1998 (Oxford: Harris Manchester College).
