ABSTRACT
The Earth formed about 4.5 billion years ago. There was no atmosphere with oxygen then. Nor was there an ozone layer high in the atmosphere. This is, seen from our interests, a huge disadvantage, since the ozone layer filters most of the destructive ultraviolet light. Oxygen and ozone in the atmosphere arose in history; awareness of this history confirms our dependence on processes that occurred long before we were born.
