ABSTRACT
The relationship between technology and employment is a very old and controversial topic. In the second section of this chapter a classical taxonomy, the roots of which can be found in the works of the nineteenth-century economists, will be discussed in detail. The effectiveness of that taxonomythe so-called ‘compensation theory’—is still a point of controversy between ‘pessimistic’ and ‘optimistic’ scholars and commentators.
