The islands of the Saronic Gulf: Salamis, Aigina and Poros

S alamis, which is the largest island in the Saronic Gulf covering an areaof 93 km2, is visited by only a few tourists. Many visitors are discour-aged by its connection with the Attic industrial area of Piraeus-Eleusis manifested in the factories, the harbour installations on the mainland and on the island, and the hulls of old ships in the bay, as well as in the monotonous concrete architecture of the island villages. However, it is still worth a day trip from Athens, for there is charming country and interesting historical monuments on Salamis (Figure 98).
