Attica III: Pentelikon, Parnes and the Thriasian plain

T he marble mountain Penteli or Pentelikon was called Brilessos inClassical antiquity. An Athenian suburb lying further south called‘Vrilissia’ has kept this ancient name, which is known from Thucydides. Under the Roman Empire (Pausanias) the name Pentelikon seems to have become usual; it derives from the name for the marble (Pentelic stone) already used in the Classical period.
