ABSTRACT

Before approaching the problem of the reception of Suicide in Russia, it is interesting to note the nature of Russia’s reception in Suicide. Durkheim, as Marx before him, did not regard Russia as a subject and recipient for his sociological theories and research. In Suicide he notes that Russia ‘is only European geographically’ (Durkheim 1897a/t.1951a:50).1 A passing comment, this opinion probably had no great import for him: taken in context, it was probably quite simply intended to explain or justify the fact that suicides in Russia were omitted from his analysis, which in turn, is explained by his lack of the necessary statistics.
