ABSTRACT
In his treatment of ethical problems Durkheim followed closely the thought of Immanuel Kant and his school, while his sociology was influenced by Auguste Comte and a detailed knowledge of eighteenth-century French culture. His intellectual formation was such that, once he had begun his scientific career, he was never again completely able to separate the sociological from the ethical-philosophical dimensions, although he always harmoniously blended the two aspects.
