Research as a commodity

Throughout the 1990s, reflecting the orientation known as economic rationalism, research was treated as a commodity just like any other in a global economy. This orientation is influencing what research governments and other bodies including industry choose to provide money for and this in turn is influencing what research academics choose to do and how they choose to do it. In this chapter I am going to explore this view of research and examine some of its effects.
