ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that entrepreneurial urbanism is a useful means of capturing and detailing the generic features of the changing role of local governments in the politics surrounding urban development. It focuses on the fate of local government in the doing of urban redevelopment, and the emergence of entrepreneurial urbanism, these changes have not occurred in a vacuum. The chapter considers some of the conceptual limits to entrepreneurial urbanism, and also some of the policy limits, as in some cases cities struggle to manage the consequences, environmental, and housing of ‘overheating’ economies. Invoking or drawing upon how people feel about a particular place and a specific issue is a widely used strategy by urban politicians in the hosting of events. Local political leaders, and those from the other walks of life they partner, such as local business representatives, are pursuing their strategies in a world in which many factors are beyond their control.
