ABSTRACT

The scene is the central square of Buck Creek. It has been roped off for the weekly Saturday night dance. Lanterns have been swung, and they give a festive note to the setting. There are several groups of early arrivals, laughing and exchanging greetings. On a raised platform the band, consisting of Uncle Smelicue with his guitar and an accordion player, is tuning up. Snatches of conversation can be heard, and the group joins in from time to time on the song which Mr. Jenkins leads off. Among the crowd several girls vie with each other in bits of dancing, and here and there a flirtation is pantomimed.
