ABSTRACT

Meaningful record keeping will be a continuous rather than an occasional process. Teachers who are familiar with the curriculum and the learning targets in each pupil's Individual Education Plan (IEP) will be aware of new and significant responses and ready to take note of these throughout the day. This information will need to be passed on regularly to all adults working with the children - record keeping must be a shared process. Teachers will also need to have a good internalised understanding of the sequence of learning for all children, while realising that pupils with PMLD may not follow this sequence in a straight line. This will require flexiblility in what is expected and an absence of preconceived ideas as to the order in which stages will be reached. It is just as important to record the process as it is to record the end result.
