ABSTRACT

Following highly publicized events of violence in schools ranging from shootings to sexual harassment and bullying, parents and K-12 educators have increasingly focused their attention on school safety. Violence and harassment directed at lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students are embedded in the broader educational concern. Research on LGBT students in schools overwhelmingly documents the discrimination and harassment they face in hostile school climates (Bochenek and Brown, 2001; Harris, 1997; Herr, 1999; Kosciw and Cullen, 2001; Mufioz-Plaza, Quinn, and Rounds, 2002; Reis, 1999; Russell, Bohan, and Lilly, 2000).
