ABSTRACT
Voltaire opposed not just the Catholic Church but Christianity in general. He was not an atheist but a Deist; that is, he believed in God but not in any established religion. One might have thought that his emancipation from Christian belief might have induced in him a feeling of sympathy with the Jews, who had been for so long victims of Christian dogma and myth. On the contrary, Voltaire hated the Jews and Judaism even more than he hated Christianity.
