ABSTRACT

Sport organisations have recently been faced with a wave of accountability pressures instigated by the need to produce elite sport performances within rationalised sporting systems (Australian Sports Commission, 2003a). Increasing competition for funding has led to closer scrutiny of organisational expenditure. Added to this weight of improving the financial position of a sport organisation is the fact that revenue is strongly linked to the profile of its elite athletes and teams. While sports recognise the need to bolster their infrastructure, player pathways and community profile with well-directed investments, they are under immense pressure to demonstrate results. In short, the imperative is to achieve more with limited resources, and demonstrate that these scarce resources have been well-spent.
