Teaching strategies

In the opening chapters of this book, we described the complex world of FE and emphasised the need for teachers to be flexible and adaptable in order to meet the demands that their managers, students and external agencies will put on them. It is worth remembering, too, that the pressures on FE colleges to recruit as many students as possible mean that teaching staff will be faced with some people who have a wide range of learning difficulties. Lumby (2001, p. 50) has argued that ‘This very comprehensiveness is both a great strength in meeting the needs of learners and a real Achilles heel in communicating what any college is about and in meeting the needs of different groups of learners.’
