ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 demonstrated the variety of ways in which distance education and e-learning are evolving. Although e-learning is becoming increasingly important within both distance education and campus-based teaching, it is not the only technology available. Even within e-learning, decisions need to be made about the use of specific media, such as text, audio and video. Decision makers have to decide under what circumstances e-learning will be appropriate and whether the older technologies of print or broadcasting, or newer technologies such as Web-casting and mobile wireless, might have advantages for distance or open learning.
