ABSTRACT

It comes as no surprise to learn that subject knowledge is considered an essential component in effective 16–19 teaching. Across all 16–19 disciplines, Ofsted reports consistently emphasise the importance of subject knowledge. Teacher confidence is a significant factor here, with security in the face of 16–19 learners a necessary starting point to develop students as confident learners. This would seem to suggest that the traditional model of a 16–19 teacher as a school-based single-subject expert still prevails.
