ABSTRACT

Preparing to become a teacher usually conjures up images of enthusing and espousing about a specific subject within the school curriculum. However, this is but a small part of being a teacher. You will be working closely with pupils in a pastoral role, being a role model for them, engaging with your own and pupils’ values and attitudes to personal, spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues. You will be contributing to and upholding the ethos and values of the school and its community once you become part of that community. This chapter illustrates how student teachers come to terms with these expectations and responsibilities.
