ABSTRACT

Teaching offers opportunities for professional autonomy yet at the same time is bound by a number of constraining frameworks and requirements which monitor what is taught, learned and assessed. As a student teacher you will need to learn how to cope with the requirements of the Standards in Qualifying to Teach, the National Curriculum requirements, GCSE and A-level examination syllabuses in your subject, as well as the organisation and management of the school and department you are working in. This chapter reflects on the challenges to student teachers as they strive to fit in with the professional and social frameworks of becoming a teacher.
