ABSTRACT
This article was categorised in the introductory chapter as adopting an interview-based methodology to researching academic work. It makes use of three sets of interview data: 24 interviews conducted with new academic staff in England and Canada, 50 previous interviews in one English university, and a re-examination of data produced for three North American studies. The focus of the study is on how new academics are inducted and socialised into their roles.
