If we lived in a uniform world, we wouldn’t need statistics. Scientists like Gene MacHine would make measurements and present them in the knowledge that they were perfectly reliable and reproducible. If we gave a pill to a person with a headache and the headache got better in an hour, then that would be the exact length of time to recovery for every patient. We would know exactly where we were.
