ABSTRACT
In July 1988 the Education Reform Act became law, sixty-two years after the control of the curriculum had been lifted. Two generations of primary-school teachers had devised their own educational programmes based on a child-centred approach and many were much affected by the introduction of the National Curriculum and its accompanying programmes of study that introduced a subject-based curriculum for children from five to sixteen years.
