ABSTRACT

Activities based upon adventure, exploration and challenge offer a learning environment centred on the very things many children seek naturally. A structured programme of adventure activities can help children satisfy their desire to meet challenging situations whilst also learning to keep themselves and others safe. There are many low-risk adaptations of adventurous activities available. These activities can provide a sense of adventure and challenge for pupils, and perhaps a subjective sense of danger, but, at the same time, may be low in risk and infinitely suitable for use within and around the immediate environment of the school by teachers who are not experienced in outdoor activities.
