ABSTRACT

During the audit and review procedures suggested in the previous chapters, there will have been a consideration of what jobs need doing in the school, as well as looking at what the existing TAs do, or could do. Also, it is likely that the current list of jobs to be done has accumulated historically, from SEN reviews, curriculum initiatives, in-school projects or even emergency stop-gap procedures as a result of a shortage of qualified teachers. Another, much more likely and positive situation is where the review has shown an increased demand for teaching and learning assistance of one kind or another. This will leave the school with several options. It is possible that the budget situation is such that there is no flexibility for either increasing hours or changing pay scales for the TAs to adapt their current contracts to the new circumstances. However, it is also clear from research, that where schools are prepared to use their budgets creatively and flexibly both are possible.
