ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 pointed out that however well qualified or trained the TAs are, they can only be as effective as their use, deployment, management and support will allow them to be. Or to put it another way: given a particular group of TAs, effective support can allow and encourage them to develop professionally, effective deployment will ensure their skills can be put to best use and effective management can enable them to grow as people, and promote their best use by teachers and teams. Kerry (2001) talks of the school leadership trusting the support staff to work effectively, in effect abandoning control because they are so good at using their own initiative. But it needs more than that: TAs need the positive support and encouragement of their class teachers and senior managers to develop their full potential.
