ABSTRACT
This chapter outlines a range of operational and technical issues associated with summative CAA, including software evaluation, installation and maintenance, risk analysis, security, timetabling, contingency plans, plagiarism and staff development. Most of the procedures described below apply specifically to screen-based assessment, rather than the use of optical CAA systems, which tend to have more in common procedurally with paper-based examinations. However, further details on the operational aspects of optical CAA systems are provided in Chapter 9 and Appendix B. Despite the emphasis in this chapter on summative CAA, which is by nature a more rigorous activity than formative assessment, many of the same processes can be adopted to aid the smooth running of all CAA.
