However, it would be wrong to conclude therefore that knowledge coming out of controversies would be unreliable. Quite the contrary: controversies are also beneficial. They attract the energy and resources necessary to settle competing knowledge claims. Without controversies we would hardly gain robust knowledge, since research findings would be much more scattered and incoherent.
