ABSTRACT

What we know about something will depend on the questions we ask of it (Postman 1989). Accordingly, what we know about reflective practice will depend on the questions we ask of it. When the editor contacted us to engage our work for this chapter he framed what we should do as follows: ‘Much has been written about reflective practice. . . . Many programs are aspiring to produce reflective practitioners.’ Accordingly we were asked to respond to the following questions regarding reflective practice:

• Has it lived up to expectations? • Is it realistic to expect teachers to change their practice as a result of self (or

aided) reflection? • How has reflective practice benefited the profession? • How can we make a good idea work in practice? • What derivation of reflective practice will emerge?
