ABSTRACT

Increasingly computing and information technology (C&IT) is being used in higher education to support teaching and facilitate learning in a wide variety of ways. Many UK students entering higher education have acquired basic IT skills through their work on the National Curriculum at school or in their previous employment and they are expected to develop their skills further during their studies. But to what extent can C&IT be used to specifically support SGT? We will re-examine the aims of SGT (as described earlier) and show that in almost every case C&IT can be used to support the achievement of these aims. In addition we need to recognize that C&IT now enables us to extend the boundaries of conventional SGT both spatially and temporally to include distance learning and asynchronous discussion forums. The use of C&IT may also give the tutor help in managing SGT, organizing classes and giving feedback to students.
