ABSTRACT

The heading of Small Group Teaching does include a wide variety of different kinds of classes in further and higher education, some of the most common being seminars, tutorials, workshops and problem based learning (PBL) meetings. A common feature of this kind of teaching is that the tutor works with a small group of students to discuss a given topic or a given problem. There are, however, other forms of small group teaching (SGT) which place much less emphasis on the presence of a tutor or teacher and seek to provide the students with a formalized opportunity for collaborative learning. These include tutor-less tutorials, self-help groups and learning sets.
