ABSTRACT

In this chapter I will explore the current personal, social and emotional landscape of girls seen as a problem. I will also explore the definitions of the problems and the strategies adopted in response. The body as a source of distress, power and control is a key theme here, as are relationships. Walkerdine et al. (2001) argue that little attention is being paid to the emotional and social losses that young women are experiencing.

The psychic economy of the way those losses are played out in the social world are just as important to address as the financial economy of the country.
