Text is one of the earliest of learning aids while Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is a more recent addition. The support for understanding which a text might supply is viewed largely through a surrogate teacher (text as tutor) analogy. This analogy is also applied to ICT but, as ICT may function readily in other ways, it is better to view it from a variety of perspectives. These include the computer as a tool, a simulator of the world, and a provider of learning environments. Different people may not learn equally well from different teaching and learning aids so this needs to be taken into account.
