ABSTRACT
The word ‘understanding’ commonly denotes a variety of mental processes, states and structures. Some features of understanding are described and the variety of understandings is illustrated through classroom subjects. Some variables of understanding are listed and the public and personal nature of understanding outlined. Features that can be particularly relevant in formal instruction are highlighted.
