ABSTRACT
While the words of the pessimistic teacher whose essay began Chapter 1 echo throughout this book, they resonate more so at this point in my argument than probably at any other. The essay ends, it will be recalled, with its author offering up a challenge to those senior staff in his school who presently manage his work to give him the support he needs in order to help restore the ‘loyalty and sense of vocation’ he once had.
